Being raised by emotionally unavailable caregivers and parents can cause an array of different issues including anxiety, depression, challenges in forming healthy relationships, and poor self esteem. I approach this by first helping my clients identify where there were breaches in attachment and how this created challenges for them. After a greater understanding of this, we work on ways to manifest a healthy relationship with oneself and others. how that looks for each individual person. We work toward honoring the pain of the past and building a better future with less anxiety, depression, and improved confidence and self esteem.
All healthy relationships with others start with a healthy relationship with oneself. It may seem unnatural to think of having a relationship with oneself when we conceive of relationships most frequently as those that we have with others, but we are all composed of various “parts.” These parts develop through different experiences that we have throughout our lives. Some parts are young and often very emotional, yet others are more in charge and self-sufficient. Throughout the course of therapy, these parts become seen and heard and start communicating with one another. This “parts work” is foundational to understanding the most important relationship that we will ever have-the one with ourselves.
We all have a “voice” inside that challenges our worth. It can be quite persistent. What if I told you that the voice that nags you can actually help move you forward and understand yourself even better? Acknowledging that voice can be quite empowering and actually the key to building your self-confidence and self-esteem. In addition to these challenges, my clients also struggle with:
Depression
Anxiety
Life changes
Decision making
Developing new strengths
Grief and loss
CBT helps individuals challenge untrue and maladaptive thoughts and change behaviors that are unhelpful, even if they are well practiced and familiar or routine.
EMDR is a type of treatment that varies from traditional talk psychotherapy. EMDR introduces additional stimuli such as eye movements or tapping while the person focuses on pieces of traumatic memories. It taps into the brain’s own healing power and has the capability to reduce emotional reactivity to past traumatic events and create new positive belief systems about oneself and the world.
Parts work-literally meaning dissecting the “parts” of ourselves and helping them work together. This type of therapy helps nurture those “parts” of ourselves that remain wounded and need healing attention. For example, when we have experiences that are linked with strong emotions, a part of the self emerges that sees the world and life through the lens of what happened at the time of that experience.
